Meanwhile, here are the counts book by book along with one image I especially like from each one. :-)
I. Uncle Remus:
33 out of 34 stories illustrated (1 no)
This is the graveyard rabbit! An appropriately dark image from A. T. Elwes. I'm fascinated with the witchcraft and conjuring in the Brer Rabbit stories, so I am glad there is an illustration of one of these proverbial graveyard rabbits from the Plantation Witch story.
II. Nights with Uncle Remus:
51 out of 70 stories illustrated (19 no)
There are so many great illustrations here that I can hardly choose, but I will say that I am very glad to have an image of Brer Rabbit and his Steeple now, thanks to J.A. Shepherd.
III. Daddy Jake:
6 out of 14 stories illustrated (8 no)
This one is easy: I love the illustration of Brer Rabbit and Brer Raccoon who are fooling the Frogs; the illustration is by Kemble.
IV. Uncle Remus and His Friends:
10 out of 24 stories illustrated (14 no)
And this is an easy one also; this picture of Brer Rabbit and the Little Rabs is one of my all-time favorites; it's by A. B. Frost for the story Why Brer Wolf Didn't Eat the Little Rabbits.
V. Told by Uncle Remus:
13 out of 17 stories illustrated (4 no)
My favorite here is Verbeck's illustration for Brer Deer and King Sun's Daughter.
VI. Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit:
all 6 stories illustrated
This is the comic-book-like project by Conde; my favorite is this one from the illustrations for Brer Bear's Big House.
VII. Uncle Remus and the Little Boy:
all 6 stories illustrated
I love this one by Conde of Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit; this is the illustration they used for the cover of the book too.
VIII. Uncle Remus Returns:
all 6 stories illustrated
This is Brer Rabbit by A. B. Frost peeking into the blacksmith's workshop in the story of Impty-umpty and the Blacksmith.
