Day 62: Shepherd illustrations

And on a much happier note than the Kemble illustrations: the Shepherd illustrations are up at Flickr! My husband scanned them, and I uploaded them, and now I can start adding them to the posts. For Nights with Uncle Remus in particular this is so exciting: there are 41 stories in Nights that do not have illustrations right now. Thanks to Shepherd, I should now be able to add images to most of those stories! I'll write up another post here when I am done with that to supply the final count. There's even one of Mammy-Bammy Big Money, the witch rabbit!

Shepherd did the illustrations for Uncle Remus in 1901 and then for Nights in 1907, and the books were frequently reissued after that. I don't think the books circulated widely in the United States, though; I found out about Shepherd's work by chance (I don't even remember how), and I found both volumes available from a used bookshop in London for just $28. So much pleasure for just $28!

I've got Flickr albums up with the images from both books now: Flickr Uncle Remus and Flickr Nights. Yay illustrations! Yay Flickr!
