Day 34: Slavery Resources

I found this blog post at Jennifer Gonzalez's blog: Improving the Way We Teach About Slavery. That led me to a project from the Southern Poverty Law Center and its website, Teaching Tolerance: Framework for Teaching American Slavery. Jennifer's blog post has an interview with Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries, host of the Teaching Hard History Podcast.

I will definitely want to keep coming back to these resources as I develop the Brer Rabbit project. It resonates with Key Concept #9: Enslaved and freed people worked to maintain cultural traditions while building new ones that sustain communities and impact the larger world.

I would like to prepare some texts that are aligned with this framework. I really believe that it is important and empowering to learn how African folktales continued to be told and retold in the Americas, even when white culture tried to eliminate the slaves' African identities and denied that African cultures even existed.
