Day 58: Jones summaries done!

Today I finished up the summaries for all the folktales in Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast, the Gullah story collection by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. There are 61 chapters in the book, and 57 of those are folktales, and 48 of those are animal tales, while 9 are stories with human actors, including an elaborate version of the "Bluebeard" legend in which the Devil is not defeated in the end (De Debble an May Belle). The animal stories are going to be so useful in triangulating just what can be trusted or not in other nineteenth century sources; I found at least one story that I am almost certain is Jones's own work, but in cases where he corroborates Harris, that is a plus. Apparently Harris consulted with Jones on the Gullah stories that he published, but they definitely had different goals and methods. Anyway, I am so glad to have these stories all summarized. I may start putting some of them at the HAX site; not all of them would be useful there, but some of them would be really fun to include.

So, here's the link to all the Jones summaries, whoo-hoo: Diigo Jones Georgia Coast.
