I wrote about the
Rene Bull illustrations, and another book I acquired very cheap is Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit, a weird little book from 1907; the name of the artist is not given. This time I bought a modern reprint and, like with the Bull book, I took it apart in order to digitize it; every page of this book is illustrated. This book is important because it is the source for some Joel Chandler Harris stories; you can see the texts of the stories published in this volume here:
The Creeturs Go to the Barbecue,
Brother Rabbit's Frolic,
Brother Bear's Big House,
Brother Rabbit Treats the Creeturs to a Race,
Brother Rabbit and the Gold Mine, and
How Mr. Lion Lost His Wool. I haven't gotten to those stories yet in my editorial work; they come very near the end of Harris's publishing career (he died in 1908, although some stories did appear posthumously).
The book also contains illustrations for stories published in earlier books: Brer Rabbit's Flying Trip, Brer Rabbit Gets Brer Fox a Hoss, Brer Rabbit Finds the Moon in the Mill Pond, How Brer Rabbit Got a House, and Brer Rabbit and the Partridge Nest.
I knew about this book and its illustrations because Project Gutenberg did an edition of the book, but the image scans are terrible. I am really excited that I will be able to use really good scans when I get to working on these stories. If all goes according to plan, I'll reach those items by the end of July.
Just for comparison, here is a
Project Gutenberg image:
And here's the scan I will be able to use instead:
with much more detail available in the image file at
Flickr (and I could zoom in anymore; this is resized for 400 pixels width):
The Gutenberg scans are very low-resolution, so they do not offer that possibility; here's how their lion looks at full-size:
It will be exciting to get to these stories when I will be able to add in the images; the book is really like a kind of comic book with lots of images for each story too!
